Living in Kalaheo, Kauai

Mostly residential, Kalaheo is perched on a hill located between the South and West shores. Though the beach is just a few minutes drive in either direction, it is one of the island’s only landlocked communities. Drier than the North or East shores, Kalaheo typically receives brief rain showers quickly followed by rainbows.

Because it is not a destination on its own, tourists tend to breeze through Kalaheo, but generally make a point of visiting Kauai Coffee Company, just outside of town. Kalaheo residents have easy access to all of the South and West shore amenities without living in the hustle and bustle of a tourist area.

A variety of locally popular restaurants are tucked away in Kalaheo. You can also find a mini-mart, gas station, post office, and pharmacy providing a nice set of amenities to keep daily life convenient. Grocery stores are within easy reach in Koloa and Poipu, Lihue and Ele'ele.

Kukuiolono Park and Golf Course is popular with residents for its low cost, well-maintained course. There are paths that can be wandered in the evening and a tranquil Japanese garden for quiet enjoyment in the day. Nearby is also a garden of ancient treasures, preserved on land owned by the late Walter McBryde. Walking paths meander through an ironwood forest and are dotted with statues and other items that give clues to the history of the west side town.

The National Tropical Botanical Garden has its headquarters in Kalaheo, where residents can volunteer to work with the largest collection of Hawaiian plants in the world, including an extensive ulu (breadfruit) collection.

While the town itself doesn’t attract many outside visitors and isn’t a major tourist destination, it’s just a fifteen-minute drive from the beaches, fine dining, and diverse nightlife offerings of Poipu and Koloa and about thirty minutes from the convenience of Lihue.

A quiet residential area with a tempered nightlife, Kalaheo offers convenience while maintaining a small town feel.
