Kealia, in Hawaiian, quite literally means “salt encrustation,” referring to the old Hawaiian method of gathering and drying salt. The neighborhood of Kealia had once been a site of salt mining for decades in Kauai’s history. For those looking to explore, the newly paved pedestrian path along the coast will take you south to the neighboring town of Kapaa, which is the most happening place on Kauai’s east side aside from Lihue.
